In seventh grade, I was the kid exercising in my bedroom and reading medical journals because I genuinely wanted to understand how the human body worked.
Apparently, I was preparing for a career.
I went on to earn my degree in exercise science and have now spent 28 years teaching people how to move. Along the way, my toolbox got considerably bigger: Pilates, yoga, Aerial Yoga, pelvic floor work, corrective exercise, meditation, breath, sound and now graduate study in Ayurvedic Integrative Medicine and Physiology.
The longer I do this work, the less interested I am in separating all of those things into tidy little boxes.
A body isn't just muscles and bones. We bring our stress, history, habits, energy, beliefs, curiosity and sense of humor into the room with us. I want to know how all of it works together.
That curiosity eventually became the Move Your Mojo Method®, my approach to bringing movement, mindset and the less easily defined spark that makes us feel alive back into conversation with one another. My work has never been about creating a “perfect” body. I am much more interested in helping you understand the one you already live in.
Meru is the sacred mountain, the center or axis around which everything turns. When I first came to Black Mountain years ago, I didn't know how important this place would eventually become to my own story. I know now.
Meruva gives me a home for the work I have spent nearly three decades building, but I don't want it to be a monument to my work. I want it to become a place where people know each other.
I want you to walk in and exhale.
I want to notice when you haven't been here for a while.
I want you to discover that you're stronger than you thought, laugh when something goes sideways, try things you swore you would never try and occasionally hang upside down.
I want you to have somewhere to return to.
Because for me, wellness has never been about endlessly fixing ourselves. It is about learning how to come home to ourselves and then taking that version of ourselves back out into our families, friendships and communities.
That is why I built Meruva.
And yes, we'll move your mojo while we're at it.
Meruva offers small-group Pilates equipment classes and Aerial Yoga, with only four people in a class so I can actually teach you rather than simply lead a room.
You can also come for private Pilates or Aerial sessions, sound baths and Ayurvedic consultations, along with workshops and gatherings that will continue to grow as Meruva does.
You do not need to already be good at any of it. You just need to be curious.
We pay attention to the spine, breath, floor, pelvic floor, hips, shoulders - all of the little compensations your body has picked up while getting you through this thing called life.
Your own hammock, plenty of space to move. Some classes build strength. Some explore balance and mobility. Some may end with you wrapped in a silk cocoon wondering why every yoga class doesn't end this way. And no.. you don't have to go upside down.
There are times when the most productive thing you can do is lie down. Sound baths with singing bowls, vibration, resonance, and stillness. Sometimes on a mat, sometimes suspended in a silk hammock. Either way, you get to stop for a while and just listen.
Your body has a nature of its own. Ayurveda does not begin by asking everyone to follow the same rules. It begins with you - your individual constitution, energy, digestion, diet, environment, sleep, daily rhythms, the time of the month and the season of life you are currently moving through.
Your own mat, plenty of space to move. Some classes build strength. Some explore balance and mobility.
Serene and energetic at the same time.
Fifty minutes that are entirely yours. We work with your body, your goals, how you are feeling that day... the class can focus on pilates, yoga, aerial... anything you need.
100% customisable.
